There are only a few potential causes of acute severe hepatocellular injury (aminotransferase levels more than 15 times normal limit). The differential diagnosis include acute viral hepatitis, drug toxicity, ischemic hepatitis, and less frequently, acute Wilson's disease, autoimmune hepatitis and acute hepatic venous thrombosis (Budd-Chiari syndrome).
