Total Parenteral Nutrition (TPN)

Back to Acute Cholestasis

Cholestasis is a known complication of total parenteral nutrition (TPN). The mechanism is not fully elucidated. TPN-induced cholestasis usually occurs several weeks (or even months) after TPN is instituted. Therefore, other potential causes of cholestasis need to be excluded before the diagnosis of TPN-induced cholestasis can be made in an acute setting.
