Aminotransferases are indicative of hepatocyte necrosis but are not indicators of liver synthetic function. Albumin, prothrombin time and bilirubin are real liver function tests and will be altered with liver insufficiency. While INR is the best indicator of acute liver failure, albumin is the best indicator of chronic liver failure.
