Liver Cancer Treatments: Chemotherapy or Radiation therapy

for Veterans and the Public

Chemotherapy or radiation therapy - Liver Cancer for Patients

Chemotherapy

Chemotherapy is treatment in which medications that are toxic to tumors are given to patients by intravenous infusion or in pill form. There is more hope that new chemotherapies can be more effective than the current options ... and that these treatments can even lengthen survival in some patients. There is still only a limited role for chemotherapy but that role is expanding.

Radiation therapy

Using radiation is not effective, because that causes as much damage to the rest of the liver as it does to the cancerous areas.
